Maradona Tipped for Shock Return to Management with Palestinian National Team
Speculation mounts in the Gulf region over potential coaching role for football legend
Rumours are swirling in Middle Eastern media that football icon Diego Maradona could make a sensational return to the dugout—this time as head coach of the Palestinian national team.
The Argentine legend, who famously managed his country’s national team from 2008 to 2010, has reportedly been linked to the role in recent days, with several Gulf-based outlets suggesting that initial contacts may have been made.
Maradona, now in his early 50s, led Argentina to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Despite an impressive start in that tournament, the Albiceleste were eliminated in a heavy 4–0 defeat to Germany. His tenure with the national side, though controversial at times, was marked by passionate leadership and unwavering support for key figures like Lionel Messi.
Following his stint with Argentina, Maradona took over at Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates, coaching the Dubai-based club from 2011 to 2012. However, his time there was short-lived, and he has not held a major coaching position since.
Now, after more than a decade out of management, could he be preparing for a return—this time in one of the sport’s more politically charged and symbolically potent roles?
While no official confirmation has emerged from the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), the rumours have sparked considerable debate. Such a high-profile appointment would undoubtedly draw international attention to Palestinian football, which continues to develop despite challenging circumstances.
Maradona has long expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause, often voicing support in public statements. That, combined with his global celebrity and outspoken political stances, has only fuelled speculation around the potential appointment.
For now, it remains uncertain whether the rumour will translate into a formal offer or agreement. But if confirmed, it would mark one of the most headline-grabbing managerial comebacks in international football in recent memory.
