A matter of state and a lighthearted controversy! As highlighted by Africa Top Sports.com, Didier Drogba stands firm in his decision to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela, a gesture that has resonated globally since last Thursday. The Ivorian striker, who sported a t-shirt expressing “Thank you Madiba” in honor of the late South African president, now faces the potential threat of sanctions from the Turkish Football League.
Expressing his sentiments on Instagram, Drogba asserted, “I’m sorry, but if I had to, I would do it again and again and again.” He clarified that his gesture wasn’t intended as a political statement but rather as a homage to Mandela, who served as an inspiration not only to him but also to a nation, a continent, and the entire world. In a Monday post, he reiterated his gratitude, saying, “Thank you again Madiba,” making it clear that any potential sanctions are unlikely to deter him.
Football regulations typically prohibit players from displaying slogans or political messages on their jerseys, subject to fines. Drogba’s compatriot and teammate, Emmanuel Eboue, also joined in the tribute by unveiling a t-shirt with the inscription, “Rest in peace Nelson Mandela.”
Support for the players came from Turkish Sports Minister Suat Kiliç, who expressed disapproval of the potential sanctions, stating, “I don’t think it’s a good decision, either for Turkey’s image abroad or for the freedom of expression of these two players.”
Given the minister’s stance, it appears that the Football Federation might refrain from imposing sanctions on the players.
