Didier Drogba: Chelsea’s Ivorian King

Didier Drogba’s return to Chelsea after a one-year stint at Galatasaray has been met with a hero’s welcome at Stamford Bridge. Despite being 36, Drogba continues to play a crucial role for the Blues, even if he’s no longer the starting striker.

In 2012, Drogba left Chelsea after eight years, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy, having won the Champions League and being named Chelsea’s best player in history by fans. His brief time in China was unsuccessful, but his tenure at Galatasaray proved valuable. Yet, Drogba’s heart always remained at Chelsea, and under José Mourinho, his dream of returning was realized.

In the summer of 2014, Drogba rejoined Chelsea on a one-year contract, despite not being a guaranteed starter. Even at the age of 36, he has remained a valuable asset, often coming in as a substitute or filling in due to injuries to key players like Diego Costa and Loïc Rémy. Drogba’s performance on the pitch continues to impress; he scored his first goal since his return in October 2014 against Maribor in the Champions League, and added more goals against Manchester United and Shrewsbury in the League Cup.

In total, Drogba has scored three goals in 12 appearances across all competitions. Considering his role as a backup, this is a respectable tally, and many believe he could reach 10 goals this season. His impact, both on and off the pitch, continues to inspire Chelsea, who are leading the Premier League and progressing well in the Champions League.

Drogba, who retired from international football after the 2014 World Cup with Ivory Coast, remains a figurehead for the club and a leader in the locker room. His legacy at Chelsea continues to shine, and his presence still holds weight as he helps drive the team toward more success.
