Angel Di Maria: Father criticises Real Madrid over winger’s Manchester United move
Angel Di Maria has completed his transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United, a move he says was made against his own wishes. The Argentine winger, who was a key figure at the Spanish club, revealed after the deal that he never intended to leave the Bernabéu.
Di Maria’s father has since spoken out publicly, expressing frustration at how Real Madrid handled his son’s contract situation. Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, he accused the club of failing to honour their initial agreements with the player.
“Real Madrid never kept their contractual commitments with Angel,” he said bluntly. “He won five or six titles with the club, yet they never fulfilled the promises originally made to him.”
The elder Di Maria also dismissed reports regarding the player’s salary, clarifying that the club never offered the annual wage of €6 million that was widely speculated. “I have heard many rumours, but I can assure you that figure was never offered,” he added.
Despite his son’s apparent reluctance to leave, the elder Di Maria confirmed that Angel is now content at Manchester United. “He is happy at Manchester United; the club treats him well,” he said. “Financially, he is much more comfortable than what Real Madrid had offered.”
The transfer marks the end of Di Maria’s successful spell at Real Madrid, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European successes. His creativity and ability to change the course of a match were highly valued by fans and teammates alike.
“Real Madrid has lost a key player capable of changing a match, a creator capable of winning a game on his own,” his father concluded.
Di Maria joined Real Madrid in 2010 from Benfica and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking midfielders. During his time at the club, he lifted numerous trophies including La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League, cementing his status as a club legend.
However, the final stages of his time at the Bernabéu were marked by uncertainty over his future, fuelled by contract negotiations that appeared to stall. The 27-year-old’s move to Manchester United offers him a fresh start in the Premier League, where he will be expected to bring flair and creativity to the Red Devils’ attacking line-up.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal expressed optimism about the signing, viewing Di Maria as a crucial addition to bolster the team’s ambitions. The club paid a substantial fee to secure the winger’s services, signalling their intent to challenge at the highest levels both domestically and in Europe.
As Di Maria begins this new chapter, the focus will be on how quickly he adapts to the physical and fast-paced nature of English football, and whether he can replicate the form that made him a standout player at Real Madrid.
