Derby make move for Basel winger Philip Otele

Nigeria winger Philip Otele is the subject of a transfer rumour linking him with a move from Swiss club Basel to Derby.

The 27-year-old left winger is contracted to Basel until 30 June 2028, but Derby are reported to be interested in taking him to the Championship. No transfer fee or probability has been disclosed.

Otele has started both of Basel’s Super League matches at the beginning of the 2026-27 season, playing 136 minutes without scoring or providing an assist. He returned to the Swiss club on 30 June following a loan spell with Hamburg.

He joined Basel permanently from Al-Wahda in July 2025 after initially arriving on loan in January of the same year. Otele helped Basel win the Swiss league and cup double during the 2024-25 campaign.

The Nigeria international previously finished as the SuperLiga’s leading scorer in 2023-24, when he scored 18 goals, although his recent record at Basel includes no goal involvement in his two league appearances this season.

Derby’s reported interest comes with Otele established in Basel’s squad at the start of the new campaign. His current deal means any move would require an agreement between the clubs rather than a free transfer, with the player’s contract running for two more seasons beyond the current campaign.
