Deportivo keep Rennes defender Lilian Brassier on transfer shortlist
Deportivo La Coruna remain interested in Stade Rennais central defender Lilian Brassier, despite the player reportedly turning down approaches from the Spanish club and other suitors in recent weeks.
With three weeks remaining before the transfer window closes, the Galician club continue to monitor the situation closely. Brassier has been on their radar since July, when Deportivo began looking for defensive reinforcements following their return to Spain’s top flight.
Initial contact was made with the player’s representatives towards the end of July, although those discussions did not develop into formal negotiations. The situation has not significantly advanced since then, but Deportivo have not abandoned the possibility of making a move.
According to the latest information from Matteo Moretto, the Marca journalist who specialises in the Spanish transfer market, Deportivo are still following the case.
The club’s return to La Liga has been accompanied by an ambitious rebuilding programme. Deportivo do not want merely to make up the numbers in the division and are seeking greater experience and top-level quality at the back.
Brassier fits several of the requirements identified by the club’s sporting department. The left-footed defender is physically strong in challenges and has experience of the demanding pace of Ligue 1. His estimated market value of 12m euros, according to Transfermarkt, is also considered manageable for a club keen to strengthen without making excessive investments.
Deportivo are not relying exclusively on the Rennes player. They are also keeping track of Nathan Zeze, the former FC Nantes defender who now plays in Saudi Arabia for NEOM SC. The parallel pursuit underlines the Spanish club’s determination to reinforce their defence, whether or not they are able to reach an agreement for Brassier.
The player’s position, however, appears to be the main obstacle. Brassier is under contract with Stade Rennais until June 2029 and is said to feel settled in Brittany. Several reports indicate that he has rejected all approaches received in recent weeks, including interest from Deportivo.
His stated aim is to play in the Europa League this season with Stade Rennais. That competition would represent a logical next step for a player developed by the club and who has re-established himself as an important member of Franck Haise’s squad.
Brassier’s stance has not persuaded Deportivo to close the file. In a transfer window where positions can change quickly from July to August, the Spanish club appear to prefer keeping the option open rather than ending their pursuit.
For now, there is no indication of an imminent breakthrough from the Rennes side. No formal offer has been reported and there have been no advanced negotiations. However, neither club is treating the situation as definitively settled, leaving the possibility of further movement before the window shuts.
Stade Rennais will soon begin their French league campaign against PSG. For that match, bookmaker 1xBet lists Stade Rennais at 6.80 to win, a draw at 5.40 and a PSG victory at 1.36.
