Denis Onyango inspires Uganda’s next generation as veteran goalkeeper earns AFCON call-up

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been praised by Uganda’s emerging players after earning another Africa Cup of Nations qualifying call-up at the age of 41.

Onyango has been included in Uganda’s squad for their 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Tunisia and Libya on 24 and 29 September.

According to Transfermarkt, the veteran goalkeeper is embarking on his eighth AFCON qualifying campaign and has made 41 appearances in qualifiers for the tournament.

Despite his advancing age, Onyango remains part of head coach Paul Put’s plans, while his influence in the Uganda Cranes camp appears to extend beyond his performances on the pitch.

Uncapped goalkeeper David Lukwago says working alongside Onyango is a source of motivation rather than pressure.

Lukwago, who has been called up to the national team by Put, said he was grateful for the opportunity and intended to make the most of his time in camp.

“I feel happy to be trusted by the coach to be part of this team. I promise to put up a good performance in training and not let the coach down by doing what is exactly expected from me,” Lukwago said, according to Kawowo Sports.

Onyango’s presence, he added, was something he welcomed.

“It doesn’t give me any pressure. I have grown up admiring Onyango, so training with him is a big motivation and inspiration to me.”

Defender Jonathan Odongo, who has also received his first Uganda call-up, echoed Lukwago’s sentiments and said he hoped to learn from the experienced goalkeeper.

“Learning never stops, and indeed, this being my first time on the national team, I have to learn from players like Denis Onyango who have been here for some time and know what it means to play for Uganda Cranes,” Odongo said.

Onyango has spent more than a decade playing at the highest level and has established himself as one of the most decorated players in South African top-flight football.

His continued involvement with Uganda provides the country’s younger players with an opportunity to train alongside one of the most experienced figures in the national team.

As Uganda prepare for their opening AFCON qualifying fixtures, Onyango’s experience could prove valuable both on the field and within a squad that includes players beginning their international careers.
