Dembo Sylla has transformed his fortunes at FC Lorient after a difficult start to life at the club, becoming an established first-choice right-back and an increasingly important member of Guinea’s Syli National.
The 23-year-old was once viewed as a prospect being moved from club to club, but persistence and character have helped him turn that promise into regular first-team football.
From Laval to Lorient
Sylla began his football education at Stade Lavallois, progressing from the under-17s to the senior team within a few years. His performances quickly attracted interest beyond Ligue 2, with 31 appearances for Laval during the 2022/23 season marking a significant step in his development.
In 2023, FC Lorient paid one million euros to sign the Guinean defender. The fee was considered a bold investment by some observers, given that Sylla was still learning the demands of senior football at the highest level.
His first season in Brittany proved difficult. Despite arriving with considerable expectations, Sylla made only one Ligue 1 appearance during the opening 19 matchdays of the 2023/24 campaign.
Three loans in search of regular football
With opportunities limited at FC Lorient, Sylla began a demanding sequence of loan spells in February 2024. He first joined Rodez, where he was expected to gain further experience in Ligue 2.
His next move took him to Belgium with Dender, before he later joined Red Star. The three successive spells gave the right-back the chance to play consistently and broaden his tactical experience.
Rather than being discouraged by the repeated changes of club, Sylla used each period away from Lorient to accumulate valuable playing time and continue his development.
A leading role in Brittany
Sylla returned to Brittany in the summer of 2026 with a stronger tactical understanding and has since overturned the previous hierarchy at FC Lorient.
The Laval-born defender is now the undisputed starter on the right side of the Lorient defence, offering reliability at the back while also contributing in attack. His form this season includes one assist in seven appearances.
That consistency has made him an important part of Alexandre Dujeux’s system and confirmed the progress he has made since his difficult introduction to Ligue 1.
Sylla’s rise has also strengthened his position internationally. He is now regarded as a dependable member of Guinea’s Syli National and has won 15 caps for his country.
FC Lorient will next face Angers in the eighth round of the French championship. The listed odds are 2.45 for a FC Lorient win, 3.20 for a draw and 2.65 for an Angers victory.
