Demba Thiam settles into Senegal squad after first call-up

Demba Thiam says he has quickly adapted to life with Senegal after receiving his first international call-up, with Kalidou Koulibaly among those helping the goalkeeper settle into the squad.

Thiam, who has spent much of his career in Italy, made Koulibaly his first phone call after learning he had been selected. The pair already knew each other from the period when Senegal captain Koulibaly was playing for Napoli.

“My integration is going well. I already knew Kalidou Koulibaly and, in fact, he was the first person I called when I received my selection,” Thiam told FSF TV.

The goalkeeper also credited Lamine Camara and Jackson with helping him become familiar with the group, saying the atmosphere around the team had made the transition easier.

“Since I arrived, players such as Lamine Camara and Jackson have helped me to integrate, and there is a good atmosphere,” he said.

Thiam also spoke about his relationship with Senegal coach Patrick Vieira. Their conversations take place in Italian, a language Vieira learned during his time at Inter Milan.

“We get along well,” said Thiam, who admits his years in Italy have left him feeling connected to the country.

“I feel a little Italian,” he added.
