‘Delay is not denial’ – Ayobami Junior savours long-awaited Nigeria Super Eagles call-up
Shooting Stars midfielder Ayobami Junior has expressed deep joy after earning his first invitation to the Nigeria senior national team, the Super Eagles, ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup in London.
The breakthrough crowns a standout Nigeria Premier Football League season defined by creativity, consistency and rising influence in the middle of the park.
His call-up marks a significant milestone for one of the NPFL’s most impressive performers this term, following a campaign that has seen him emerge as one of Shooting Stars’ most influential figures in midfield, driving their attacking play with vision and precision.
League-leading creativity and recognition
He leads the assist charts with 13 assists, the highest in the league, a return that strengthened his case for a maiden Super Eagles invitation under coach Éric Chelle, who has continued to integrate NPFL-based players into his squad for the four-nation tournament.
Reacting to the moment, the midfielder described how he first learned of his invitation, recalling a surprise notification from a friend that confirmed his long-awaited breakthrough into the national setup.
“The first person I spoke to was was my friend. He was the one who woke me up actually. he called me saying I got an invitation from the Super Eagles. I said how, and he was like check your phone. Then I saw the invite. I was so happy,” Ayobami told Shooting Stars media.
Growth, ambition and statistical impact
Reflecting on his development at the Ibadan-based club, Ayobami credited improved player welfare and personal determination for his sharp rise, highlighting how increased support structures helped elevate his performances this season.
“So that’s the best so far in the league — 13 assists this season. It was a fantastic moment for me, and I’m so proud of it. After all these years, you know, getting denied every time was a bit frustrating, but when I got the invite, I just said to myself, ‘Delay is not denial.’ I should just keep pushing. It is every player’s dream to represent his country, so it was a fantastic moment for me.”

Now part of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad preparing for the Unity Cup scheduled between May 26 and May 30, Ayobami will be aiming to translate his outstanding domestic form onto the international stage as he seeks to establish himself among the team’s emerging midfield options.
