“Defeat to D.R Congo hard to accept” - Samuel Chukwueze reacts to World Cup playoff heartbreak

Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze has reacted to their defeat to D.R Congo in the final of the African playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles, after a 1-1 draw with the Leopards in regulation time, lost 4-3 on penalties, ultimately ending their dream of playing at next year’s global showpiece.

Speaking after the game, Samuel Chukwueze described Nigeria’s inability to win the African playoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a disaster.

“Nigeria is a team made up of top-level players……. it was a disastrous and hard-to-accept night. We will come back stronger and more mature.

“Regarding the talents, it’s not a question of quality: we have a very talented team, perhaps even more so than that of Congo. But football is cruel: it’s not a question of talent, just a bad day,” the forward said.

Samuel Chukwueze added, “Bravo to our opponent, who was impenetrable across all lines. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a team play like the DRC’s. They accomplished their mission. Congratulations and good luck for the rest.”

“I ask forgiveness from our people,” he added. Despite the disappointment, his message carried a promise: the Super Eagles will regroup, learn, and return stronger.”

After the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers heartbreak, Nigeria will now turn their attention to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
