MC Alger’s league title celebrations turned tragic after four spectators lost their lives following a stadium accident during their final match of the Algerian top-flight season.
The latest fatality was confirmed on Monday, with the club announcing that a fourth supporter had died in hospital from injuries sustained on June 21.
The incident occurred at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers when a security barrier collapsed, causing fans to fall from the upper tier onto the lower stands during post-match celebrations.
One person died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries the next day, according to local authorities and the Algerian Health Ministry.
Local media reports indicate that dozens more were injured as fans surged forward to celebrate MC Alger’s title-clinching result—a goalless draw against NC Magra, which secured the club’s second consecutive league crown.
Over 70 injured fans were treated at three different hospitals, though most have since been discharged.
In a show of solidarity, MC Alger players and staff visited hospitals to donate blood to those wounded.
The 5 July Stadium had been filled to capacity for the decisive match, with celebratory flares and green smoke filling the air.
However, in the wake of the tragedy, the league trophy presentation was postponed.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended his condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
