De Zerbi credits Tottenham’s winning mentality after Chelsea victory

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi says his side’s improving mentality was central to their 2-0 Premier League win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The victory was Tottenham’s second of the season and lifted them to 12th in the table, moving them clear of the relegation zone after a difficult start to the campaign.

Two goals after the interval secured all three points for Spurs, who have now won consecutive league matches following their 3-1 victory over Coventry City in midweek.

De Zerbi praised the quality of his players and the way they handled the challenge posed by Chelsea.

“The quality of the players today, Mateus Fernandes, Tonali, van der Ven, Robertson, Mathys Tel, Maddison, Gallagher – they played very well,” he told Spurs media after the match.

He also highlighted Tottenham’s approach to the game, saying they had created “many problems” for the home side and had shown the determination required to claim the win.

“The mentality, because we wanted to win this game. We fought in the right way, and we made our fans and our club very happy,” added De Zerbi.

The result extended Tottenham’s unbeaten run to three matches and marked back-to-back league victories after their poor opening to the campaign.

De Zerbi believes a change in attitude within the squad is helping to improve the team’s performances and atmosphere around the club.

“I think the key for this club, for our club, for our team, is the mentality,” he said. “I think now we are improving in the mentality. There is another atmosphere, there is another connection, and another relationship with the players.”

Tottenham will attempt to continue that progress when they return to Premier League action next Saturday, with Crystal Palace visiting for their next fixture.
