David Silva clarifies Hong Kong move after one-match deal is announced

David Silva has said his agreement with Hong Kong club Supreme Chatin is limited to a single league fixture, despite reports suggesting the 40-year-old former Spain international had completed a full transfer.

The announcement attracted widespread attention on Wednesday after media reports said Silva had joined Supreme Chatin. The club also welcomed the move enthusiastically on its official Instagram account, writing: “Our founders have struck a major stroke of luck with this signing!”

Supreme Chatin said the deal would offer supporters special access, including behind-the-scenes content and exclusive training sessions involving the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner.

However, Silva, who announced his retirement more than three years ago, told Mundo Deportivo that the arrangement had been presented as something far bigger than it actually was.

“I am surprised. In the end, it is nothing more than one match,” Silva said. “They told me about it as if I had signed a contract for a whole season, and they gave me the opportunity to play only in the afternoon. I was only there for one afternoon.”

Silva confirmed that the appearance would come in a league match but stressed that it should not be viewed as a return to football on a long-term basis.

“It is a league game, but it is still just one match,” he said. “When they offered it to me, it seemed interesting because it was in Hong Kong, a city I like very much. I have a friend there and I have visited several times.

“It is good to take part in one match and try to perform well.”

The former player also addressed suggestions that the move could have been motivated by financial concerns. Silva said he had been amused by the reaction and insisted that his financial position was secure.

“Some people have expressed concern about my financial situation, but in the end I laugh because people rush to make a decision at the slightest provocation,” he said.

“But that is not the case here. Thanks to my father and my adviser, with whom I have invested well over the years, I have achieved great success.”
