David Silva has named Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz as his surprise choice to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while saying Real Madrid will struggle to overhaul Barcelona’s six-point lead in La Liga if the Catalan club maintains its current form.

The former Spain international made his comments during an appearance on the El Partidazo programme on COPE radio, where he was asked about the leading contenders for the individual award.

Rather than selecting Lamine Yamal or Kylian Mbappe, Silva opted for fellow Spaniard Ruiz, who has played an important role for both Paris Saint-Germain and the national team.

“For me, teamwork is the most important thing, because without it you cannot win,” Silva said. “But if I had to give it to someone, it would be Fabian, because he has won the most trophies over the past two years.

“He has been an important player for Paris Saint-Germain and then for the national team. He does not receive enough recognition, and I do not know why, because he is a great player. I admire him a lot and he has done an amazing job quietly.”

Silva added: “Rodri has already won it; otherwise I would have mentioned him too.”

The 40-year-old former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished career with Valencia, Manchester City and Real Sociedad, as well as representing Spain from 2006 to 2018. Born in the Canary Islands, he retired from professional football in the summer of 2023.

Three years after ending his career, Silva has now announced that he will play one match for Supreme Chatin in Hong Kong.

Silva was also asked whether Real Madrid could recover from their six-point deficit to Barcelona and challenge for the La Liga title.

His response was emphatic: “If Barcelona continue like this, it will be impossible.”

He praised the standard Barcelona have maintained under manager F lick, saying: “They are playing at a very high level and have been performing brilliantly for many years with this coach. They have strengthened their squad extremely well. If they continue at this level, they will have no rivals.”

Silva acknowledged that Real Madrid could not be discounted because of the quality in their squad.

“Real Madrid are Real Madrid,” he said. “You can never rule them out because they have great players. If they keep their level close to Barcelona’s until the end of the league, they can compete.

“But I insist, if Barcelona continue at this level, I do not think so.”
