David Pagou wants to build young and cohesive Cameroon team – Carlos Baleba reveals
Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba has revealed head coach David Pagou’s ambition to build a young, united and cohesive Indomitable Lions squad as the team looks to establish a new identity under his leadership.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder explained that Pagou is focused on developing a group of players who can work together effectively, while creating an environment that allows younger members of the squad to settle in and demonstrate their abilities.
Speaking on the Talent d’Afrique programme, Baleba, who now plies his trade for Manchester United said the coach’s approach had been clear since he took charge of the national team, with particular emphasis on unity, youth development and collective responsibility.
According to the midfielder, Pagou wants to assemble a rejuvenated squad in which players understand one another and work towards a common objective rather than relying solely on individual quality.
Baleba also highlighted the role of more experienced members of the team in helping new players adapt to the demands of international football. Despite describing himself as still young, the Brighton midfielder acknowledged the responsibility of guiding teammates who are joining the squad.
“Since he arrived, I think he’s been trying to build a young, cohesive team that gets on well together. We, the veterans, if I may put it that way, as I’m still young myself, are learning and helping the others to settle into the squad so that they can demonstrate their qualities should the coach call upon them on the pitch,” Baleba said.
His comments underline the importance Pagou places on building strong relationships within the squad as he works to shape Cameroon’s next generation of international players.
The coach’s approach also places responsibility on established players to create a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers, ensuring they can adapt quickly and compete for places in the team. Such cooperation could prove important as Cameroon seek to maintain their competitiveness in African football.
Baleba, however, was unable to participate in Pagou’s squad during the last international break because of injury, meaning he missed the opportunity to work directly with the team during that period.
The midfielder’s absence was a setback for Cameroon, given his growing importance in the national setup. His return to fitness will be closely followed as the Indomitable Lions continue their preparations for upcoming international assignments.
For Pagou, the challenge will be to translate his vision of a young and united squad into consistent performances on the pitch, with the contribution of players such as Baleba expected to be important in establishing the team’s collective identity.
