David Dego: Israel-Ethiopia midfielder joins Shamakhi from Ironi Modiin

Israel-Ethiopia attacking midfielder David Dego has joined Azerbaijani side Shamakhi from Ironi Modiin. The 25-year-old, who plays primarily as a central attacking midfielder, has signed a deal running until 30 June 2027 with the Premyer Liqa club.

Dego moves to Azerbaijan after a spell in Israel’s second tier with Ironi Modiin, whom he joined in February 2026 from Hapoel Hadera. His switch marks his first move outside Israeli football and comes with his current market valuation listed at €75,000.

The left-footed midfielder has built up substantial experience across Israel’s top two divisions, making more than 100 appearances in Liga Leumit and featuring in the Ligat ha’Al and its championship and relegation rounds. Across league and cup competitions, he has contributed goals and assists while amassing over 5,900 senior minutes.

Dego’s career has taken him through several Israeli clubs since stepping up from Jerusalem’s youth ranks in 2021. He moved from Jerusalem’s under-19 side into the senior setup at Beitar Jerusalem, later representing Kiryat Shmona, Hapoel Petah Tikva and Hapoel Hadera before his short stint at Ironi Modiin.

He also has a team honour to his name as an Israeli second-tier champion, underlining his experience in promotion-chasing environments ahead of his new challenge in the Premyer Liqa.

Dego’s move to Shamakhi is a completed transfer, with the midfielder now under contract at the Azerbaijani club until the summer of 2027.
