Danny Welbeck receives strong backing for England call-up ahead of 2026 World Cup
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has thrown his full support behind Danny Welbeck, insisting the in-form striker deserves a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The England forward with Ghanaian roots last featured for the Three Lions at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, has been in sensational form this season.
The 34-year-old forward has netted six goals in ten Premier League appearances, including the opener in Brighton’s 3-0 victory over Leeds on Saturday, November 1.
Despite a seven-year absence from international duty, calls are growing for the veteran striker’s return. Speaking to the club’s official website, Hurzeler expressed confidence in Welbeck’s ability to make an impact for England once again.
“I have a big belief that Danny Welbeck is able to play for England. I asked the squad if they think Danny can play for England and they all agreed, so that was the only time we mentioned it. Let’s see what happens. But I will try to emphasise that England has a great coach and he will make the right decisions,” Hurzeler said.
Welbeck, a former Manchester United and Arsenal player, has made 42 appearances for England, scoring 16 goals, and will be hoping his fine form earns him another opportunity on the international stage.
