Danny Welbeck: Chelsea linked with move for Brighton’s experienced England forward

Chelsea are considering a move for English-Ghanaian striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the 35-year-old centre-forward under contract at the Amex until June 2027. The London club are monitoring the possibility of adding the veteran attacker, who is currently valued at around €3 million, as they explore options to deepen their attacking pool ahead of the new campaign.

Welbeck, who wears the No 18 shirt for Brighton, has been a regular part of the Seagulls’ attacking rotation since joining the Premier League side in October 2020. His experience at the top level is seen as a key attraction, with Chelsea looking at proven options already acclimatised to English football rather than longer-term projects.

Born in Manchester and standing at 1.85m, Welbeck has built a career at the highest level of the game, notably winning the UEFA Champions League with Manchester United in the 2007-08 season. He later added major domestic silverware at Arsenal, including the FA Cup in 2015 and 2017, before re-establishing himself in the top flight with Brighton.

Now in the latter stages of his career but still under a lengthy deal on the south coast, any move would likely require Chelsea to negotiate with Brighton rather than explore a cut-price exit. For the moment, Welbeck remains contracted to Brighton & Hove Albion until 30 June 2027, with Chelsea’s interest yet to progress beyond the exploratory stage.
