Danny Namaso has spoken candidly about his introduction to the Cameroon national team, reflecting on his debut, his past decision to decline a call-up under former coach Rigobert Song, and his admiration for football legend Samuel Eto’o.
After a series of missed opportunities—including one in November that reportedly frustrated head coach Marc Brys—the 24-year-old FC Porto forward has now officially joined the Indomitable Lions setup.
The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) confirmed his eligibility at the end of January, paving the way for his first international appearance.
A Special Debut for Namaso
Namaso made his debut last Wednesday in Cameroon’s goalless draw against Eswatini in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Introduced as a second-half substitute following Frank Magri’s departure, the former England U20 international described the significance of the moment in an interview with Fecafoot TV.
“I was just excited, just happy to be there. I know what it means to me and my family, most of whom live here in Cameroon.
So I felt it, and I was very, very excited to step onto the field,” he said. “I wasn’t really nervous; I was just excited. It was a special moment.”
Turning Down Song’s World Cup Call-Up
Despite his recent integration into the squad, Namaso had previously declined an invitation to join Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup under then-head coach Rigobert Song. He explained that the timing was not right for personal reasons.
“For the World Cup, it was not the right time for me,” he said, without delving into further details.
A Lifelong Admiration for Samuel Eto’o
Namaso has long been a supporter of the Indomitable Lions and revealed that he grew up idolizing Cameroon’s all-time leading goalscorer and current Fecafoot president, Samuel Eto’o.
“Since I was little, my hero was Samuel Eto’o Fils. I always watched his teams’ matches. I’ve always been a fan of the Cameroon national team,” he shared.
With Cameroon set to face Libya on Tuesday in their final match of this international window, Namaso may have the opportunity to earn his first start and further establish himself in the squad.
