Danny da Costa earns Mainz 05 extension after ever-present season
Danny da Costa will stay at Mainz 05 after his contract was automatically extended, confirming what had already been reported by AZ and Bild several weeks ago.
The club have now officially announced the trigger was activated once Bundesliga survival was secured with the crucial away win at St. Pauli. That result guaranteed safety and ensured the 32-year-old defender will continue wearing the Mainz shirt next season.
Da Costa has become a key figure for the Rheinhessen in recent years, valued for his versatility in a back three and on the flanks. This campaign underlined his importance: he has featured in all 33 league matches so far and has made 44 of a possible 47 appearances in all competitions, contributing six goal involvements.
“Danny is the epitome of reliability. To consistently deliver throughout an entire season and be on the pitch for almost every game is a remarkable achievement. We are delighted that we can continue to rely on Danny’s calmness, stability, and experience at Mainz 05,” said sporting director Niko Bungert.
Looking ahead, da Costa is equally upbeat: “I’m looking forward to the upcoming season with the guys… I will definitely continue to give my all to ensure that we achieve the best possible success with the team.” He has already played 131 competitive games for Mainz, with more now guaranteed to follow.
