Daniel Ilyes Mahdid: The MC Alger prospect redefining his defensive role

Daniel Ilyes Mahdid is the 17th player in Africafoot’s #TalentsAlgeriens countdown of 25 young footballers to watch in Algeria’s Ligue 1 during the 2026/27 season. The MC Alger centre-back is attracting attention because, despite now playing in central defence, his footballing education was built in midfield.

The ranking is necessarily subjective and considers more than natural ability. Potential, expected importance at club level and the role the coming season could play in each player’s development are also taken into account.

For most of his youth career, Mahdid was not a central defender. He operated as either a number six or a number eight, learning to receive the ball under pressure, dictate play and build attacks from the middle of the pitch.

His position began to change with Algeria’s youth teams. Razik Nedder gradually moved him into the centre of defence, initially as an experiment that developed into a genuine long-term option.

That switch became particularly clear this summer. Playing for Brahim Hemdani’s Algeria Under-21 side, Mahdid established himself at centre-back alongside Issam Naim as the team won the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.

He had already made his senior debut for MC Alger several months earlier, appearing on 1 November 2025 against USM Khenchela under manager Rulani Mokwena.

The move into defence has not removed the midfielder from Mahdid’s game. It has simply repositioned him several metres behind the ball.

A midfielder’s education in a defender’s body

Aziz Lahoussine, a former Algeria Under-17 coach, knows the player’s original identity well. He worked with Mahdid when the teenager was still playing exclusively in midfield and believes the positional change has added another dimension rather than erased his earlier qualities.

Mohamed Mekhazni has followed Mahdid since childhood. The current technical director of Olympique Akbou previously worked in MC Alger’s technical department and with the Algeria Under-20 team.

Mekhazni has been outspoken about the player’s potential, while also stressing that the move to central defence is relatively recent. Mahdid has the physical frame associated with the position, but many of his instincts remain those of a midfielder.

Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who has worked with USMA, Olympique Akbou and ES Setif, also describes Mahdid primarily through the language of midfield. Even when positioned in the back line, the teenager is judged on how well he reads the game and how confidently he uses the ball.

That profile gives him a different route into the position. Many centre-backs gradually learn to become more comfortable in possession. Mahdid learned to think, receive and pass as a midfielder before being asked to defend deeper.

A strong bond with MC Alger

Mahdid’s connection with MC Alger extends beyond his role on the pitch. He grew up in central Algiers and has long had a particularly close relationship with the club where he developed.

Lahoussine recalls that relationship through an episode from his time with the player. After leaving the national set-up to take charge of the USMA Under-20 team, Lahoussine received an unexpected request from his former player.

Mahdid’s words were direct: « Tu es un enfant du Mouloudia ».

Lahoussine could have used their relationship to try to bring him to USMA, but chose not to do so. He believed the player’s interests had to come before his own and maintained that the best path for Mahdid was to continue progressing at MC Alger.

A few months later, Mahdid began to move closer to the club’s senior team.

A popular presence in the dressing room

Away from football, Mahdid is described as open, sociable and quick to form relationships. That makes him stand out among some of the more reserved young players of his generation.

Lahoussine used those qualities within the Algeria Under-17 squad. During one camp, he asked Mahdid to share a room with Youcef Izem, who was then quiet and still finding it difficult to communicate with the rest of the group.

Mahdid was therefore more than a technical resource for the coaching staff. He was also someone they could rely on to help others settle into the squad.

Even when Mahdid was injured during his first call-up for a UNAF tournament in 2023, Lahoussine still chose to give him a few minutes on the pitch.

Family support behind the progress

His development has also been followed closely by his family. Mahdid’s father is regularly joined at matches by several of the player’s uncles, creating an almost permanent support group around his career.

They attend his games, applaud and encourage him, then speak to him afterwards about what they have watched.

Mekhazni has ambitious expectations for Mahdid. The defender was among the few players from his age group to be promoted into the Algeria Under-21 squad, and he did more than make up the numbers. He became an established central defender and played a direct role in the team’s Mediterranean Games triumph.

At 19, Mahdid still has to prove himself consistently at senior level and compete for more playing time with MC Alger. Yet his profile is already unusual: the physical power expected of a defender, combined with a midfielder’s understanding of possession and distribution.

Mahdid has become a centre-back. He has simply never stopped thinking like the number six or number eight he was throughout his formative years.
