Dani Carvajal’s proposed Getafe move collapses, says club president

Dani Carvajal will not return to La Liga for the time being after the proposed move to Getafe broke down, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

Reports on the previous day had suggested the former Real Madrid right-back had reached an agreement with Getafe, with only approval from La Liga remaining before the deal could be completed.

However, Mundo Deportivo says there is currently no agreement for Carvajal to join the club. Getafe president Angel Torres confirmed the negotiations had stalled in comments to the television programme El Chiringuito.

“There is nothing. Everything has collapsed,” Torres said.

“There is nothing new. There is no agreement, and you cannot break something that was never agreed. We will try,” he added.

Torres said approval would be required from all parties before the transfer could proceed.

“All parties must give their approval: La Liga, the player and the club. Nothing will happen today,” he said.

The reasons for the collapse remain unclear, although Mundo Deportivo reported that the situation appeared to be connected to financial fair play regulations.

The newspaper suggested Getafe may not have the necessary salary-cap allowance to register Carvajal, preventing the club from completing the proposed signing.

Carvajal is currently a free agent after his contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of last season. That status means he is permitted to join any club outside the usual transfer-window restrictions.

The Spain international spent his previous spell at Real Madrid and had been linked with a move to Getafe during the current period. The latest report, however, indicates that the immediate prospects of such a transfer have significantly weakened.
