Dani Carvajal’s proposed Getafe move at risk over La Liga squad-cost rules

Getafe face a significant obstacle in their attempt to sign former Real Madrid full-back Dani Carvajal, with La Liga regulations requiring the club to ensure his proposed salary fits within their maximum squad-cost limit.

Carvajal is currently a free agent after leaving Real Madrid when his contract ended in the summer of 2026. Before Getafe can complete a deal, La Liga’s assessment committee must establish the player’s valuation and determine whether his wages can be accommodated under the club’s financial limit.

The committee considers a range of factors when assessing players. These include their age, physical condition, injury record, the state of the transfer market, the length of the proposed contract and the number of international appearances made during the previous three years.

Individual awards and international and domestic honours are also taken into account, as are a player’s proportion of appearances in the current and previous seasons.

Some of those criteria could work in Getafe’s favour. Carvajal’s age, physical condition and number of appearances during the current and previous campaigns are viewed as positive factors for the club.

However, his international record and the titles he has won over the past three years could count against the proposed deal, making the committee’s final valuation crucial to whether the transfer can proceed.

Carvajal made 451 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 14 goals and providing 66 assists. During his time at the club, he won the Champions League six times, the UEFA Super Cup five times and the FIFA Club World Cup five times.

He also collected four Spanish Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and one Intercontinental Cup.

Getafe are currently 11th in La Liga with eight points from two wins, two draws and three defeats. Their next match is against Barcelona on Saturday in the eighth round of La Liga, at Camp Nou.
