Getafe defender Dani Carvajal says he would “pay a fortune” to experience another of Real Madrid’s famous comebacks at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Carvajal, who left Real Madrid after a successful spell with the club and joined Getafe on a free transfer this season, told AS that his love of football had returned since making his comeback.
“I have a great love for football,” he said. “The atmosphere I experienced before going out on to the pitch at San Mames recently is what makes me happy and reminds me how lucky I am.
“I wanted to feel like a footballer again, to play because I love the game and enjoy it as I did when I was a child.”
The defender said he had quickly settled at Getafe and was determined to appreciate every positive result.
“I feel very comfortable at Getafe,” Carvajal added. “I am happy to have recovered the feeling of being a footballer and to be playing again.
“I want to enjoy and value every victory as if it were a trophy. I am convinced the team will come through this difficult period.”
Carvajal also reflected on his departure from Real Madrid, describing the farewell he received as one of the finest experiences of his life.
“I had an exceptional farewell at Real Madrid, and it was one of the best experiences of my life,” he said.
“Going out into the street, feeling the affection of the Real Madrid fans, hearing them thank me for everything I had given and ask me to return in the future brings me more happiness than any trophy.
“Knowing that the fans are proud of what I achieved and that I gave everything I had is the most beautiful feeling.”
Asked about the possibility of experiencing another Champions League comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu, Carvajal said: “I would pay a fortune to live through something similar again. You cannot imagine the atmosphere at Champions League matches; it is indescribable.”
He recalled the tension of one of Real Madrid’s dramatic European nights, particularly when six minutes of added time were announced over the stadium’s loudspeakers.
“I remember clearly the moment they announced six minutes of added time, because the entire stadium changes,” he said. “We were extremely fortunate to experience those moments.
“In the semi-final against Bayern Munich, Marco Asensio barely touched the ball before it reached Rodrygo perfectly. Thibaut Courtois made outstanding saves, we were on edge, and then the goal suddenly came and everything changed.”
Carvajal left Real Madrid after making 451 appearances and winning 27 trophies during his distinguished career.
