Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has revealed how goalkeeper André Onana has transformed his game by improving his mental approach after a tough start to life at Old Trafford. Onana, who joined the Red Devils in 2023, has quickly become one of the standout players this season, registering four clean sheets in eight Premier League matches—a feat unmatched by any other goalkeeper so far in the campaign.

Despite his impressive performances now, Onana faced early criticism for his shot-stopping abilities during the 2023/24 season, with some questioning whether he could handle the pressure that comes with being Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, according to Dalot, Onana’s growth has been more about mental resilience than any change in his technical skills.

Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, Dalot said, “I think it’s been more of a change mentally than footballistic attributes.

I think he’s the same player.

The only thing that he changed is that he is, I think, more balanced mentally and really prepared for the highs and lows.”

Dalot highlighted the unique pressures of playing for a club with the stature of Manchester United, where expectations are consistently high and the scrutiny intense.

He believes that Onana has found the right mental balance, allowing him to stay composed, regardless of the situation.

“At this club, because of the demands and the expectations we have here, it can be really easy for you to fall mentally and to feel really bad.

Even when things are going well for you, for you to feel over-hyped,” Dalot added.

Dalot pointed out that Onana’s newfound mental strength has translated into his performances on the pitch, where the goalkeeper exudes confidence and calmness even in high-pressure situations. “

I think he found this balance of being really calm and really confident, and I think it shows on the pitch that he is really good,” Dalot explained.

Onana’s rise to become one of the top goalkeepers in the league is a testament not only to his physical abilities but also to his mental fortitude.

His strong performances this season have helped Manchester United solidify their defense, and he has become a critical player for Erik ten Hag’s side.

With the Premier League season still in its early stages, Onana will be looking to maintain his form as United strive for consistency in their quest for a top-four finish.

His ability to stay focused under pressure will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the club’s success this season.
