The prestigious Liège-Bastogne-Liège is commemorating its centennial edition this year, and the South African team MTN-Qhubeka is set to make its debut in this historic classic on April 27.
MTN-Qhubeka will also make an appearance at the starting line of the 78th edition of La Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Notably, last year, Gerald Ciolek secured victory in the season’s inaugural classic, Milan-San Remo, while riding for MTN-Qhubeka.
Thierry Gouvenou, the race director at Amaury Sport Organisation, acknowledges the potential of MTN-Qhubeka, stating, “This is a team in its second year with very talented riders. They possess climbing abilities, which are essential for an event like Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Their participation also reflects the globalization of cycling, as the sport continues to expand.”
Team manager Douglas Ryder expressed his excitement about the news, stating, “This is a significant milestone for us. It demonstrates that we are now competing in the world’s premier events. It’s truly encouraging to see that organizers have placed their trust in us.”
