Crystal Palace target Bayer Leverkusen’s Ivorian defender Odilon Kossounou

Crystal Palace have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s standout defender Odilon Kossounou as a top transfer target this summer. Following an impressive season in Germany, the Ivorian international has attracted interest from several major clubs, including Premier League giants Liverpool. However, it is Crystal Palace who appear most determined to secure his services.

The Eagles are reportedly prioritizing the acquisition of Kossounou as they brace for the potential departure of their star center-back, Marc Guehi.

Guehi, who has been instrumental in Palace’s defense, is rumored to be on the verge of a move away from Selhurst Park, prompting the London club to seek a high-caliber replacement.

Kossounou, with his formidable defensive prowess, fits the bill perfectly.

According to football insider Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace’s interest in Kossounou is serious, with the club viewing him as a key component in their plans to strengthen their backline.

The Ivorian defender, who has just come off a stellar campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, has proven himself to be one of the most reliable defenders in the Bundesliga.

His performances have not only caught the eye of Palace but have also been noted by other top clubs across Europe.

Kossounou’s partnership with Burkinabe defender Edmond Tapsoba at Leverkusen has been particularly noteworthy.

The duo formed a formidable defensive unit that played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s success last season.

The club finished the Bundesliga campaign strongly and made a deep run in the UEFA Europa League, where they reached the final, only to fall short at the last hurdle.

The 22-year-old’s consistent performances have also been recognized on the international stage. Kossounou was a key figure for Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, where his defensive solidity helped the team advance to the latter stages of the tournament.

His contributions both domestically and internationally have led to him being voted the best Ivorian player playing abroad this year, further cementing his reputation as a rising star in European football.

For Crystal Palace, the potential acquisition of Kossounou would be a significant statement of intent.

The club is looking to build on their mid-table finish last season and push for higher ambitions in the Premier League.

Bringing in a defender of Kossounou’s caliber would not only bolster their defense but also signal their commitment to competing with the league’s top teams.

Liverpool had previously shown interest in the Ivorian defender, considering him as a potential addition to their defensive ranks.

However, the Reds have since shifted their focus elsewhere, leaving the door open for Palace to make their move.

With Marc Guehi’s future at the club uncertain, Crystal Palace are keen to act swiftly to secure Kossounou’s signature and avoid being caught off guard by Guehi’s departure.

As the summer transfer window progresses, Crystal Palace will be eager to finalize a deal for Kossounou, who could become a cornerstone of their defense for years to come.

The Ivorian’s blend of physicality, tactical intelligence, and composure on the ball makes him an ideal candidate to step into the Premier League and make an immediate impact.

With negotiations likely to intensify in the coming weeks, Crystal Palace fans will be watching closely, hopeful that their club can land one of the most promising young defenders in European football.
