Crystal Palace blocked from signing Ousmane Diomandé after Sporting extension

Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomandé has stalled following the Ivorian’s contract extension with the Portuguese club.

Sporting CP recently secured Diomandé’s future by extending his contract until June 2030 and setting a release clause of €80 million.

The move reflects the Lisbon club’s determination to retain one of its most promising players despite mounting interest from across Europe.

“This contract extension clearly demonstrates Sporting’s desire to retain one of its most promising players, despite growing interest from European clubs in recent months,” the club said.

Crystal Palace had identified Diomandé as a potential replacement for Marc Guéhi, who joined Manchester City during the winter transfer window.

However, Sky Sports reports that the high cost and strong competition for Diomandé’s signature have made the transfer unlikely.

The English Premier League club remains committed to strengthening its defence this summer, exploring alternative targets after winter efforts.

Options under consideration include Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge, Charlie Cresswell from Toulouse, and Ruben Kluivert from Lyon.

Despite the setback, Palace could still attempt to negotiate for the 22-year-old Ivorian, whose performances and influence at Sporting CP have attracted attention.

The club’s officials continue to monitor the situation as they plan for the summer transfer window.

Diomandé has quickly established himself as a key figure in Sporting’s squad, impressing with both defensive solidity and versatility.

His development has made him one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe, and Sporting’s decision to secure his services until 2030 sends a clear message to potential suitors.

With the summer window approaching, Crystal Palace faces the challenge of balancing ambition with budget constraints while seeking a long-term solution for their defensive line.
