Cristiano Ronaldo says he may be entering his final season with Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has increased uncertainty over when he will end his playing career, admitting that the current season could be his last.

“Will this be my final season? Maybe, but I don’t know exactly,” Ronaldo said at a news conference.

The Portugal captain added that his decision would depend on both his physical condition and his state of mind.

“If my body allows me to, and my mind does too, and I am still in good physical condition, then maybe,” he said. “I don’t know.”

Ronaldo said he had not yet made a final decision about his future.

“We will see what happens in the future, but I have not made my final decision yet,” he added.

The 40-year-old has been included in Portugal’s first squad selected by new manager Jorge Jesus. The team are preparing to face Wales, Norway in two matches and Denmark in the Nations League.

Ronaldo said his immediate ambitions included reaching the Nations League final and scoring the 1,000th goal of his career, with the achievement made even more meaningful if it came while playing for Portugal.

“I aim to reach the Nations League final and score my 1,000th goal in my career. It would be even better if it happened with the national team,” he said.

Jesus was appointed as Portugal manager after the departure of Roberto Martinez.

Martinez was dismissed after Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup in the last 16. They lost 1-0 to Spain in the round of 16, with Mikel Merino scoring the only goal.
