Cristian Romero’s Arsenal interest puts Tottenham transfer stance to the test

Cristian Romero wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Arsenal this summer, according to The Sun, in a potential move that would see the club captain cross north London to join his current side’s biggest local rivals.

However, Tottenham are not prepared to make such a transfer easy. Senior sources at the club told The Sun that they would not consider selling any player to Arsenal, setting up a major obstacle to any possible deal for the Argentina defender.

Romero, 28, has three years remaining on his Tottenham contract, meaning the club retain control over his future. If Arsenal are to pursue the move, they would need to convince Tottenham to break a long-standing stance over transfers between the two north London clubs.

The defender has spent five seasons with Tottenham and is reportedly preparing to leave the club this summer. He has also previously been linked with a move to Atletico de Madrid, while Inter Milan have emerged as another club interested in signing him.

Romero’s options could therefore extend beyond Arsenal if he does depart Tottenham. But a switch to the Emirates Stadium would be by far the most controversial possibility because of the intense rivalry between the two clubs.

The Sun compared the potential transfer with Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham to Arsenal in 2001. Campbell was able to make that switch as a free agent, meaning Tottenham could not prevent him from joining their north London rivals. He was later branded a traitor by sections of the Spurs support.

The newspaper wrote: “The move across north London would be a truly astonishing transfer and would have similarities to Sol Campbell’s move from Tottenham to Arsenal in 2001. But the difference in this switch is that Campbell was a free agent, which meant Tottenham could not stop the centre-back from leaving for enemy territory, although he was later labelled a traitor by Spurs fans.”

No player has made the move directly between the clubs since 2010, when William Gallas completed a controversial transfer in the opposite direction at the end of his Arsenal contract.

That history explains why Romero’s reported preference for Arsenal would carry such significance. Unlike Gallas and Campbell, the Argentina international is not approaching the end of his deal. Tottenham’s three-year hold over his contract gives them the final say on whether he can leave and, in particular, whether he can join Arsenal.

Romero reached the World Cup final with Argentina and has established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important players during his five seasons in north London. His reported desire to move, combined with interest from Atletico de Madrid and Inter Milan, could make him one of the summer transfer window’s most closely watched defenders.
