CR Belouizdad’s continental struggles deepen after heavy defeat to AS Otoho

CR Belouizdad’s difficulties on the African stage intensified on Saturday as the Algerian champions fell 4–1 to AS Otoho, extending a worrying pattern of heavy defeats in continental competitions.

The latest setback, delivered with authority by the Congolese side, adds to a series of damaging losses that have raised questions about the club’s competitiveness beyond Algeria’s borders.

The trip to Brazzaville for the second matchday of the CAF Confederation Cup proved disastrous from the opening whistle.

Overwhelmed by AS Otoho’s pace and physical intensity, Belouizdad conceded early and never recovered.

The Congolese champions dictated the tempo, combining disciplined pressing with fluid attacking transitions that repeatedly exposed their opponents.

While CRB mounted a brief reaction late in the match, they were unable to alter the trajectory of an encounter that underlined their ongoing frailties.

This latest defeat joins a growing list of painful nights for Belouizdad in Africa.

The club has endured several heavy losses in recent years, particularly in the CAF Champions League, where they have struggled to match the tempo and tactical sharpness of the continent’s elite.

One of the most striking setbacks came on 22 December 2024, when Al Ahly dismantled the Algerians 6–1 during the group stage in Cairo.

The Egyptian giants exposed CRB’s defensive vulnerabilities with clinical precision, dominating every phase of play.

The pain has not been limited to encounters with North Africa’s strongest sides.

Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the continent’s most tactically advanced clubs, have also inflicted harsh lessons.

On 22 April 2023, Sundowns dismantled CRB 4–1 in a match that highlighted the Algerian team’s difficulty coping with sustained high tempo.

Two years earlier, on 22 February 2021, the South African side delivered a resounding 5–1 defeat, again showcasing CRB’s recurrent struggles in dealing with pressing and rapid transitions.

The pattern stretches further back. In 2001, ASEC Mimosas handed Belouizdad one of the heaviest defeats in their history, a 7–0 loss at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

That match remains a painful reference point, often cited as symbolic of the club’s long-standing challenges in high-stakes continental fixtures.

Despite dominating Algerian domestic football in recent seasons, CRB have repeatedly failed to convert national strength into continental consistency.

Their setbacks tend not merely to be defeats but heavy collapses, often revealing shortcomings in physical preparation, tactical organisation and mental resilience.

The gap between their performances at home and on the African stage appears to be widening.

As criticism mounts, the club faces increasing pressure to confront structural issues that have contributed to this decline.

Without substantial adjustment—both in ambition and approach—CR Belouizdad risk remaining trapped in a cycle that has turned difficult nights into recurring humiliations.
