Coventry City secured their first win over Newcastle in the 21st century with a 4-1 victory at home, bringing the sixth round of the Premier League to a dramatic conclusion.
The newly promoted side had not beaten Newcastle since October 1999, but repeated the same scoreline from that previous success to end a run of seven matches without a victory against their opponents in all competitions between 1999 and 2026.
Frank Lampard’s team made the ideal start when Jack Rudoni converted a penalty in the sixth minute. Coventry then defended their lead before extending it two minutes into the second half through Siddiqi Sharif.
Newcastle responded in the 70th minute, with Sven Botman reducing the deficit with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. However, Coventry restored their two-goal advantage only three minutes after Ellis Simms had come on as a substitute.
Another substitute, Stefan Mofni, completed the scoring in the 86th minute, just three minutes after entering the game.
The result gave Coventry a second successive win under Lampard. They had beaten Nottingham Forest 1-0 before the international break and now moved up to 14th in the table with six points.
Newcastle, meanwhile, continued an inconsistent run and dropped to 11th with eight points.
The result also marked Coventry’s first victory over Newcastle in the current century. Their last success against the club had come in October 1999, and neither side had since produced a result of this scale in the fixture until Coventry matched the 4-1 scoreline.
