The Round of 16 witnessed the participation of only three Arab teams: Egypt, Morocco, and Mauritania, as Algeria and Tunisia bid farewell in the earlier stages.
Angola became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals after a resounding 3-0 victory over Namibia, setting up a clash with Nigeria, who eliminated Cameroon with a 2-0 scoreline.
Congo DR, on the other hand, advanced by defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout after the original time ended in a 1-1 draw.
Cape Verde ousted Mauritania with a solitary penalty goal, while Ivory Coast triumphed over Senegal in a penalty shootout, ending the latter’s title defense aspirations.
The remaining two quarterfinal berths will be contested by four teams today. The fixtures are as follows:
– Mali vs. Burkina Faso: Tuesday, January 30, 6:00 PM
– Morocco vs. South Africa: Tuesday, January 30, 9:00 PM
The winners of these matches will face off in the quarterfinals.
