Cote d’Ivoire beaten by Cameroon as Yan Diomande admits experiment ‘didn’t work’

Yan Diomande gave a frank assessment after Cote d’Ivoire lost 1-0 to Cameroon in a friendly at Ebimpe on Saturday, 3 October 2026.

The winger, who came on as a substitute, said the result was disappointing despite the match being a warm-up fixture, stressing the importance of any meeting between the two sides.

“It is true that it was a friendly, but a Cote d’Ivoire-Cameroon match is always special,” Diomande told NCI. “We wanted to win, but the coach wanted to try something. Unfortunately, it did not work.”

Herve Renard made 10 changes to his starting XI for the match, using the encounter as a major test of his squad options.

Cameroon scored the only goal shortly after half-time, with Bil Nsongo finding the net to hand Renard his first defeat since returning as Cote d’Ivoire manager.

The loss was likely to frustrate supporters, particularly given the historic rivalry between the teams. However, the extensive changes were intended to provide the coaching staff with a clearer assessment of the squad beyond the first-choice players.

The match also offered Renard the opportunity to evaluate alternative selections ahead of Cote d’Ivoire’s next qualifiers for CAN 2027.
