SOUTH AFRICA TO HOST 2015 COSAFA CUP IN MAY
The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed on Sunday that South Africa will host the 2015 COSAFA Cup, bringing the prestigious Southern African tournament back after a year’s absence. The 2014 edition was canceled due to logistical issues, continuing a pattern of recent challenges for the competition.
The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) tournament, a regional staple for the past 17 years, has struggled with financial instability, missing three consecutive editions between 2010 and 2012 due to a lack of sponsorship.
COSAFA President Suketu Patel announced that the 2015 edition is scheduled for May, although host cities are yet to be confirmed. SAFA President Danny Jordaan welcomed the opportunity, highlighting South Africa’s commitment to regional football development.
Reigning champions Zambia will return to defend their title. Historically, Zambia and Zimbabwe lead the competition with four titles each, followed closely by Angola and South Africa with three. The tournament is expected to draw strong regional interest as it regains momentum.
