Corinthians opt against contract extension for Dutch-Ghanaian attacker Memphis Depay

Corinthians have decided against extending the contract of Netherlands international forward Memphis Depay, bringing his time with the Brazilian club to an end.

The decision was taken by club president Osmar Stabile despite prolonged negotiations between the two parties over a new deal for the 32-year-old forward.

Interestingly, Corinthians and Depay had reached an agreement on the main terms of a contract extension as recently as July 26, with the final draft reportedly ready for signing. However, the club’s management made a late U-turn and opted not to proceed with the renewal.

Corinthians cited their current financial situation as the main reason for the decision, stressing that the move was made to maintain financial balance and ensure responsible management of the club’s available resources.

The Brazilian giants have also thanked Depay for his contribution during his spell at the club.

Depay made 79 appearances for Corinthians, scoring 20 goals and helping the team secure three trophies during his time in Brazil.

The former Manchester United, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid forward played a key role in Corinthians’ Paulista Championship and Brazil Cup triumphs in 2025, before helping them win the Brazilian Super Cup in 2026.

With the proposed extension now off the table, Depay will leave Corinthians and is set to begin the search for a new club ahead of the next chapter of his career.

His departure brings an end to a spell that saw the experienced Dutch forward add silverware and goals to his Corinthians career.
