Clermont Foot Eyes Another Female Coach After Helena Costa’s Departure
Clermont Foot continues to break new ground in French football by potentially entrusting their first-team coaching duties to a woman once again. Following the sudden and unexplained exit of Helena Costa just before the start of the Ligue 2 season, the club is reportedly in talks with Corinne Diacre, a former French international and trailblazing coach.
According to L’Équipe, Claude Michy, president of Clermont Foot, has reached out to Diacre, 39, who boasts an impressive playing career with 121 caps for France and holds the distinction of being the first woman to earn the DEPF — the professional football coaching diploma in France.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Michy revealed the club’s proactive approach: “I have already received 45 CVs from men, but I also called a woman.” This statement underscores Clermont’s commitment to promoting female leadership in a traditionally male-dominated role.
Diacre’s appointment would mark a significant milestone, not only for the club but also for French football, as Clermont seeks to carve a reputation for inclusivity and progressiveness. While the season is yet to begin, the club’s desire to see a woman lead its squad this campaign highlights a bold and inspiring vision.
As discussions continue, Clermont Foot’s decision could set a powerful precedent and inspire other clubs to broaden their horizons in coaching appointments.
