Percy Tau’s hopes of returning to Egyptian football could be in jeopardy due to a clause in his current contract with Qatari side Qatar SC.
The South African forward joined Qatar SC in January 2025 on a six-month deal following his departure from Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he spent three-and-a-half years and helped the club secure multiple titles.
Tau’s 2024/25 campaign came to an end on Sunday after Qatar SC suffered a 1-0 defeat to Al Ahli in the Emir Cup, finishing a disappointing 10th in the 12-team Qatar Stars League.
During his stint, the Bafana Bafana vice-captain made 11 appearances across all competitions, registering two assists but failing to find the back of the net.
With his short-term contract set to expire in June, Egyptian Premier League side Zamalek SC has reportedly expressed interest in signing the former Mamelodi Sundowns striker ahead of the new season.
However, a potential move may not be straightforward. According to Arabic outlet Twaslnews.com, Tau’s contract includes a clause that allows Qatar SC to extend his stay by an additional two years based on performance metrics.
This clause could complicate any transfer negotiations, especially if the club decides to trigger the option.
“South African Percy Tau, the former Al Ahly winger and current Qatar SC player, is on the list of targeted deals for the upcoming summer transfer window for the White Castle,” a source told Twaslnews.com.
“The planning committee is facing some obstacles in the Percy Tau deal, most notably that the player is bound by a contract with his club, Qatar SC.
“Zamalek officials will have to negotiate with his club as a first step, and then agree with the player on the financial compensation he wants to receive.”
