Paul Nsio’s first-half goal helped Raith Rovers secure their place in the next stage of the Challenge Cup after a tense penalty shootout victory over Queen’s Park.
The play-off tie finished 1-1 after normal time before Raith edged the contest 3-1 on penalties, bringing an end to a hard-fought encounter that tested both sides physically and mentally.
Nsio, the young Congolese defensive midfielder, was at the centre of the evening’s decisive moments.
He opened the scoring in the 31st minute, striking Raith’s only goal during regulation time and underlining his growing influence within the squad.
It was his second goal of the season in all competitions, following his effort in the 6-0 league win against Ross County on 13 December.
Raith Rovers started brightly and were rewarded for their early pressure, but despite taking the lead they were unable to extend their advantage. Queen’s Park remained competitive throughout and gradually worked their way back into the match.
The equaliser arrived in the second half, capitalising on a lapse in concentration from Raith, and ensured the contest remained finely balanced.
Both teams pushed for a winner as the match wore on, yet clear chances proved scarce and neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.
With no further goals forthcoming, the tie was settled by a penalty shootout, a scenario that brought palpable tension inside the stadium.
In the shootout, Raith Rovers showed greater composure. Nsio and his team-mates converted their chances with confidence, while Queen’s Park faltered, allowing Raith to progress with a 3-1 victory on penalties.
The result represents a significant boost for Raith Rovers, who take confidence from overcoming a demanding test.
Qualification from such a closely contested match provides momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign, particularly as the squad continues to balance cup commitments with league ambitions.
Attention now turns back to domestic action. While awaiting confirmation of their next Challenge Cup opponents, Raith will resume league duties on Saturday, 31 January, with an away trip to Ayr for the 24th matchday.
The fixture offers another opportunity to maintain pressure on the teams at the top of the table as they continue their push in the promotion race.
