Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau set to depart Rodez at season’s end

Lionel Mpasi-Nzau will leave Rodez Aveyron Football at the conclusion of the current campaign, with the Congolese international opting not to extend his contract beyond June 2025.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper has decided to seek a new challenge after several seasons with the Ligue 2 outfit. His departure has now been officially confirmed, signalling the end of an era for both the player and the club.

Although Rodez had hoped to retain him, Mpasi-Nzau has declined a contract renewal and is expected to explore new opportunities in the French football landscape.

Among the clubs showing keen interest is AS Nancy Lorraine, the current leader of the National Championship. With promotion to Ligue 2 firmly in sight, the Lorraine-based side views Mpasi-Nzau as a potential cornerstone for their future squad.

Discussions between the two parties could gain momentum in the coming weeks, particularly if Nancy secures their return to the second tier of French football.

The experienced goalkeeper, who trained at Paris Saint-Germain earlier in his career, has earned a reputation as a calm and dependable figure between the posts.

Despite enduring an inconsistent 2024–2025 season—often rotating between starting duties and a place on the bench—he still featured in 19 league matches, registering two clean sheets. His composure, work ethic, and leadership have remained evident throughout.

At 29, Mpasi-Nzau offers a balance of maturity and resilience. His background as a full international for the Democratic Republic of Congo, combined with years of Ligue 2 experience, has made him an attractive proposition for clubs looking to stabilise their defensive structure with a reliable presence in goal.

For Nancy, his potential signing would align with their broader strategy of blending youthful promise with seasoned professionalism.

With ambitions of a swift and sustainable return to top-tier competition, securing a goalkeeper of Mpasi-Nzau’s calibre would be a significant step.

His presence could provide the defensive assurance required to guide a youthful side through the rigours of a higher division.

Rodez, meanwhile, will be tasked with identifying a suitable replacement during the upcoming transfer window. Mpasi-Nzau’s departure leaves a notable void in both the dressing room and on the pitch, given his influence and steady performances in recent years.

As summer approaches and the transfer market begins to stir, Lionel Mpasi-Nzau stands at the crossroads of a pivotal career decision.

With several French clubs monitoring his situation closely, and Nancy emerging as a frontrunner, the Congolese shot-stopper appears ready to embrace a fresh chapter with ambition and confidence.
