Claude Leroy Clarifies: “I Never Resigned” from Congo Role
Despite widespread speculation, Claude Leroy has confirmed he is still the coach of the Republic of Congo national team, denying earlier reports that he had resigned following the team’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final exit.
“I never said that I resigned,” Leroy clarified. “I told the players that, following the way I was treated during the tripartite meeting between FECOFOOT, the Ministry of Sports, and the Red Devils staff after the loss to Nigeria, I was reflecting on the situation. I said they would be the first to know if I made a final decision.”
After Congo’s 4-2 loss to DR Congo, Leroy had expressed frustration over poor treatment by officials following a previous defeat to Nigeria in Pointe Noire. His emotional message to players — interpreted by many as a resignation — was instead a warning of uncertainty, not a final decision.
“I have never accepted the way I was treated,” Leroy stated. “But on behalf of my staff, I congratulate you for the work done.”
Leroy has since reaffirmed his commitment, adding that he is already planning for the next FIFA international window in March. For now, the Frenchman — who has coached multiple African nations — remains at the helm, but his future may still depend on changes within Congo’s football governance.
