Congo-Brazzaville’s hopes of competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a decisive blow following its suspension by FIFA over government interference in the country’s football federation.
As a result, the national team is set to forfeit its upcoming fixtures against Tanzania and Zambia.
FIFA Suspension Leads to Automatic Defeats
FIFA’s ruling, enforced on 5 February, prevents the Congolese national team from taking part in any official matches.
With the international break underway, the Red Devils have been unable to convene for their scheduled games against Tanzania on 20 March and Zambia on 25 March.
In line with FIFA regulations, the governing body is expected to record both matches as 3-0 defeats for Congo-Brazzaville.
This follows a similar scenario last year when the team was forced to forfeit its qualifier against Niger under identical circumstances.
Elimination Confirmed as Congo Sinks to Bottom of Group E
Already struggling at the bottom of Group E, which includes World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, the Red Devils remain without a single point in the campaign.
The latest developments have mathematically eliminated them from contention, leaving no possibility of advancing, even as one of the best second-placed teams.
Prolonged Uncertainty Over Football Governance
The ongoing dispute between Congo’s Ministry of Sports and the national football federation shows no signs of resolution, raising concerns over the country’s future participation in international competitions.
FIFA has remained firm in its position, insisting that the suspension will remain in place until government interference ceases. With no clear resolution in sight, Congolese football faces a prolonged period of uncertainty, with the national team’s absence from competitive fixtures likely to continue.
