Clubs from North Africa made an impressive statement on the opening matchday of the 2019–2020 CAF Confederation Cup, dominating their respective groups and confirming their ambitions early in the competition. RS Berkane, Hassania Agadir, Pyramids FC, and Al Masry all secured important victories, while only Libya’s Al Nasr failed to claim maximum points after being held to a draw.

Finalists in the previous edition, RS Berkane began their campaign in commanding fashion. Facing ESAE FC, the Moroccan side left no room for doubt and controlled the match from start to finish. Berkane ran out comfortable 3–0 winners, with Zaid Krouch, Hamdi Laachir, and Djibril Ouattara finding the back of the net. Midfielder Alain Traoré played a key role in the success, providing two assists and orchestrating the team’s attacking play. Their convincing victory underlined why Berkane are once again considered serious contenders for the title.

Egyptian club Pyramids FC also enjoyed a strong start, earning an impressive 3–1 away victory against Rangers International of Nigeria. Despite the hostile atmosphere, Pyramids showed composure and efficiency in front of goal. Mohamed Farouk opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Amor Layouni and Islam Eissa added two more to seal the win. The result demonstrated the Egyptian side’s ability to perform under pressure and pick up valuable points on the road.

In another thrilling encounter, Al Masry edged Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou in a dramatic five-goal contest. The home side fought bravely and pushed their opponents to the limit, but Al Masry’s experience proved decisive. Austin Amutu scored twice, while Karim El Eraki netted the late winner in the final minute to secure a hard-fought 3–2 victory. It was a cruel ending for the Mauritanian underdogs, who had matched their opponents for most of the game.

Hassania Agadir ensured Morocco’s strong showing continued with a solid 2–0 win over Nigerian giants Enyimba. Goals from Karim El Berkaoui and Malick Cisse gave the hosts a comfortable advantage and a perfect start in Group D. Their disciplined performance highlighted both defensive stability and attacking efficiency.

Elsewhere, Al Nasr of Libya were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against Mali’s Djoliba AC, with both sides sharing the spoils. Horoya AC also picked up a point after a goalless draw away to Bidvest Wits. Other fixtures saw DC Motema Pembe and Zanaco draw 1–1, while San Pedro and Paradou played out a 0–0 stalemate.

Overall, the opening round showcased the strength and ambition of North African clubs, many of whom immediately positioned themselves as early favorites in this year’s competition.
