Confederation Cup Final: Al Ahly Aim to Make History Against Séwé Sport
The 2014 CAF Confederation Cup final promises to be a thrilling clash between Ivorian club Séwé Sport de San Pedro and African football giants Al Ahly of Egypt. The first leg takes place this Saturday in Abidjan, where the Red Devils will look to assert their dominance and take a decisive step toward lifting the only major African trophy missing from their illustrious cabinet.
Despite the CAF Confederation Cup being less prestigious than the CAF Champions League, this competition remains elusive for Egyptian clubs. But Al Ahly, the continent’s most decorated side, are determined to break that trend.
“We are determined to win this title,” affirmed Wael Gomaa, Al Ahly’s Director of Football, to Hebdo Ahram.
“Despite many absences in the squad, we will give everything to win and become the first Egyptian club to claim this cup.”
Now managed by Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido, Al Ahly shifted their full focus to this tournament after being knocked out of the Champions League in the Round of 16. The Confederation Cup presents a unique opportunity to complete their African collection, and the team is approaching the final with high ambition.
“We want to get the best result possible in the first leg to make the return match easier. I believe we are capable,” Gomaa concluded.
However, they must tread carefully against Séwé Sport, who are hungry for continental glory and will be eager to defend their turf in front of home fans in Abidjan.
