Liverpool’s attacking setup has come under scrutiny as Mohamed Salah, despite scoring 32 goals this season, appears increasingly isolated in the frontline.
His recent performances against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Newcastle in the Carabao Cup have highlighted the challenge, prompting concerns over the team’s attacking balance.
Carragher Highlights Salah’s Struggles
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns over Salah’s lack of attacking support, noting that the Egyptian forward is often left to operate without sufficient assistance from his teammates.
“The lack of support in attack is obvious. I almost feel sorry for Salah,” Carragher said while speaking as a pundit on English television.
He pointed to the PSG match as a prime example, where Salah struggled to influence the game under the tight marking of left-back Nuno Mendes.
“He was criticized after the game, but Mendes really hampered him. He can’t do everything alone without the support of his teammates,” Carragher added.
A Shift in Liverpool’s Attacking Dynamic
Liverpool’s frontline has evolved significantly in recent years. The once-dominant attacking trio of Salah, Sadio Mané, and Roberto Firmino provided fluidity and precision, but with both Mané and Firmino now gone, that understanding has not been fully replicated.
While Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, and Cody Gakpo have shown flashes of quality, Carragher believes they lack the consistency and chemistry that previously defined Liverpool’s attack.
“Liverpool’s other forwards are good, but they’re not quite at that exceptional level,” he noted, suggesting that the team is missing the cohesion and movement that made their frontline so effective in past seasons.
Calls for Reinforcements
Looking ahead, Carragher has urged Liverpool to strengthen their attack in the upcoming transfer window, emphasizing the need for two high-caliber forwards to support Salah and restore the team’s attacking balance.
“If Liverpool want to challenge at the highest level again, they need two top-class attackers to play alongside Salah. It’s crucial for the team’s balance,” he stated.
With Liverpool aiming to compete for major trophies, the club’s recruitment strategy could prove decisive in determining whether Salah continues to be a lone figure in attack or is given the support needed to maximize his impact on the pitch.
