Como’s nine-goal Lens rout enters Champions League record books

Como’s 9-1 victory over Lens has added another remarkable result to the modern Champions League record books, with the Italian side becoming only the second team to score nine goals in a single match in the competition.

The result came on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, during the fourth round of this season’s league phase. Bayern Munich were the previous club to reach nine goals, beating Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in September 2024.

According to Opta, Como, managed by former Spain international Cesc Fabregas, are also the first side to score nine away from home in the Champions League since Feyenoord defeated Olympiacos 9-0 in September 1971, when the tournament was still known as the European Cup.

Tasos Douvikas scored a hat-trick against Lens, becoming only the third Greek player to score three goals in a Champions League match. He follows Kostas Mitroglou, who achieved the feat for Olympiacos against Anderlecht in October 2013, and Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored three for Benfica against Barcelona in January 2025.

Three eight-goal victories

There have been three Champions League matches decided by an eight-goal margin:

– Liverpool 8-0 Besiktas, 6 November 2007 – Real Madrid 8-0 Malmo, 8 December 2015 – Lens 1-9 Como, 4 November 2026

Liverpool became the first team to score eight goals in a Champions League match when they beat Besiktas at Anfield in November 2007.

Peter Crouch scored twice and Yossi Benayoun claimed a hat-trick. Liverpool scored six times after half-time, setting a competition record that was later matched by Lyon in their 7-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.

Eight years later, Rafael Benitez guided Real Madrid to an identical scoreline against Swedish side Malmo in December 2015.

That match also produced an individual record. Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals and Karim Benzema added three, making it the only Champions League game in which two different players have each scored a hat-trick.

Ronaldo finished the group stage that season with 11 goals and ended the 2015-16 campaign with 16. Real Madrid went on to win the trophy after beating Atletico Madrid on penalties in the final.

Seven-goal margins

The competition has also produced 14 victories by a margin of seven goals:

– Juventus 7-0 Olympiacos, 10 December 2003 – Arsenal 7-0 Slavia Prague, 23 October 2007 – Marseille 7-0 MSK Zilina, 3 November 2010 – Valencia 7-0 Genk, 23 November 2011 – Bayern Munich 7-0 Basel, 13 March 2012 – Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 BATE Borisov, 21 October 2014 – Bayern Munich 7-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, 11 March 2015 – Barcelona 7-0 Celtic, 13 September 2016 – Liverpool 7-0 Maribor, 17 October 2017 – Liverpool 7-0 Spartak Moscow, 6 December 2017 – Manchester City 7-0 Schalke, 12 March 2019 – Manchester City 7-0 RB Leipzig, 14 March 2023 – Bayern Munich 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb, 17 September 2024 – Paris Saint-Germain 7-0 Brest, 19 February 2025
