Cody Gakpo ruled out of Netherlands Nations League games after ankle injury

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has withdrawn from Xavi Hernandez’s Netherlands squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures after suffering an ankle injury.

Gakpo was forced off just 17 minutes into the Netherlands’ 2-1 Nations League victory over Serbia after being caught by a robust challenge from Sasa Lukic early in the match.

The forward attempted to continue but was unable to play a further part in the contest, raising concerns over the extent of the injury ahead of the Netherlands’ next international commitments.

Xavi confirmed after the match that Gakpo was dealing with an ankle problem, although the Netherlands head coach initially played down fears that the injury was serious.

“I don’t think it’s serious. It’s in his ankle. I don’t know exactly the result, but tomorrow we will know. Hopefully it’s not too important.”

Liverpool medical team consulted

The Dutch Football Association subsequently consulted Liverpool’s medical staff as they assessed Gakpo’s condition.

The forward was due to undergo further examination to determine the severity of the injury, with both the Netherlands and Liverpool monitoring the situation closely.

Following discussions between the relevant parties, it was decided that Gakpo should return to Merseyside rather than remain with the national team for the upcoming fixtures.

The decision allows Liverpool’s medical staff to conduct additional tests and establish a clearer diagnosis before determining the forward’s recovery programme.

Gakpo’s withdrawal comes as Liverpool prepare for their return to Premier League action after the international break.
