Cody Gakpo calls Liverpool's sacking of Slot disappointing

Cody Gakpo has broken his silence on Liverpool’s shocking decision to sack Arne Slot, calling it a real disappointment for everyone at the club.

For the first time, the Dutch forward spoke publicly about his former manager’s departure.

“A shame that the manager has been sacked,” said the forward about his fellow Dutchman. “Especially so soon after the season where we had fought to qualify for the Champions League.”

Gakpo admitted the move caught everyone off guard. “I don’t think anyone, any of the players saw it coming,” he explained. “But yes, that… I believe the club released a statement about that with the explanation in it.”

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Gakpo emphasized players must move forward. “Many of our players at the club are also working towards the World Cup now. We have to put it to the side.”

He maintained respect for Slot, revealing he personally reached out. “I had of course sent him a message to thank him for the past two years and of course with the highlight of last season.”

Though Gakpo was a regular under Slot, scoring only nine goals in 52 games marks his worst season at Liverpool. Rumors swirl about his future, but Liverpool won’t sell him before signing at least two new wingers.
