Approximately a thousand homeless individuals gathered in Sao Paulo on Tuesday evening to express their opposition to the upcoming 2014 World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 12 to July 13. They voiced concerns about the exorbitant costs associated with hosting the event, which they argue could have been better utilized for social housing projects.
However, what began as a peaceful demonstration turned violent as clashes erupted between protesters and police forces. Stones and other projectiles were thrown at law enforcement officers, prompting them to respond with tear gas.
Despite calls for calm from figures such as UEFA President Michel Platini, the situation remained tense and unresolved.
